About Me
I hold an MFA from Yale with a background in journalism. Early in my career I found success in advertising, marketing, and speechwriting and that work has carried through to today. Generally speaking, you don’t go to the Yale School of Drama with the goal of making it in the world of corporate marketing, but I’ve found that creativity and the expression of thoughts and ideas through words are valued in many places and I’ve found mine.
In 2019 I published the narrative non-fiction A Bird in the Deep. It’s an exploration what has been called the true story behind Herman Wouk’s The Caine Mutiny. The story had a personal connection for me because it was based on the ship that my grandfather served on during WWII – the USS Partridge. Kirkus Reviews noted that “this well-written history draws connections to an iconic novel and illuminates the lives of World War II sailors.”
In my research for Bird, I uncovered a murder-mystery of sorts in the National Archives and decided to write my second book as a novel: The Lapwing Affair.
While promoting Bird, I found an unexpected audience on my TikTok channel @jchristopherkrouse where I continue to build an audience that shares my passion for not just WWII but layers of storytelling in film and novels.
This journey has taken me to second place in my career. One where I am writing new things, finding an audience, and exploring ideas that I find interesting and sharing them with others.
